What does Jeremiah 4:21 mean?

God is expressing deep anguish through the prophet Jeremiah, watching his people ignore repeated warnings and hurtle toward destruction. The "standard" (a flag or signal for gathering troops) and the trumpet's sound represent the approach of enemy armies, so God is essentially asking: "How much longer must I witness this disaster unfolding?" It's the cry of a parent who has pleaded with their child to change course, only to watch them continue down a harmful path. This captures the emotional weight of God's judgment—it's not casual or cold, but born from genuine pain over the suffering that's coming because of people's stubborn refusal to turn back to him.
