What does Jeremiah 38:28 mean?

Jeremiah had been imprisoned in the courtyard of the palace guard, confined but not hidden away in a dungeon. He remained there through the long siege of Jerusalem, watching as the city's situation grew more desperate, unable to leave yet somehow protected even in captivity. When the Babylonian armies finally breached the walls and took the city, Jeremiah's confinement ended, though the nation's suffering was just beginning. There's something quietly powerful about how he endured in that in-between space, neither free nor destroyed, until God's larger purposes moved forward.
