What does Jeremiah 35:9 mean?
The Rechabites, a nomadic clan described in this passage, had made a covenant generations earlier to reject settled life, agriculture, and permanent homes. They kept this ancient family vow as a spiritual discipline, living instead in tents and avoiding the structures and possessions that tied other Israelites to the land. Through their example, God was challenging the people of Judah to examine their own commitment to following Him, suggesting that true devotion sometimes means willingly letting go of the comforts and securities the world offers. The point isn't that houses and crops are evil, but that unwavering faithfulness to a calling, even when it costs us convenience, shows what genuine trust in God looks like.
