What does Jeremiah 35:8 mean?
The Rechabites were a family group who had committed themselves to an unusual lifestyle, following strict rules set by their ancestor Jonadab generations earlier. They refused to drink wine, build houses, plant crops, or own vineyards, instead living as nomads to stay separate from the surrounding culture. When the prophet Jeremiah tested their faithfulness by offering them wine, they refused, explaining this verse, which shows their unwavering loyalty to their family's ancient covenant.
