What does Jeremiah 35:3 mean?

Jeremiah is setting up an important object lesson. He brings together representatives of the Rechabite family, a group known for their strict commitment to following their ancestor Jonadab's rules, which included not drinking wine or building permanent homes. By gathering them in the temple, Jeremiah is about to show them wine and see whether they'll break their family covenant, using their faithfulness as a contrast to Judah's unfaithfulness to God. This verse simply marks the moment he assembles all these people as witnesses and participants in what comes next.
