Jeremiah 35:18
“Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, “Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according to all that he commanded you;’”
What does Jeremiah 35:18 mean?
Jeremiah is affirming the Rechabites for their faithfulness, even in a time when most of Israel had turned away from God. The Rechabites were a clan that had committed generations earlier to following strict rules set by their ancestor Jonadab (like not drinking wine or building houses), and they kept that covenant faithfully despite living in a changing world. God notices and values this kind of sustained obedience, even when it goes against cultural pressures or becomes inconvenient. The message is both a commendation and a subtle rebuke to the larger nation: if a human family can remain devoted to their ancestor's commands, shouldn't God's people honor their covenant with him?
