Jeremiah 35:17

“Therefore Yahweh, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will bring on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken to them, but they have not heard; and I have called to them, but they have not answered.’”

What does Jeremiah 35:17 mean?

God is saying here that judgment is coming because the people have consistently refused to listen to His warnings. He didn't act in anger without patience, he spoke to them repeatedly and called them back to the right path, but they ignored Him again and again. When people reject opportunity after opportunity to change course, consequences naturally follow. This doesn't mean God is punishing them for a moment's mistake, but rather responding to a pattern of hardened hearts. It's a difficult message, yet there's something important in it: God gave fair warning. He didn't hide what was coming or act without reason. For those going through hard times, this can remind us that God isn't arbitrary or cruel, even when life gets painful. He always speaks first, hoping we'll turn around, before anything else unfolds.
