What does Jeremiah 34:17 mean?
God is confronting the people of Judah for breaking their promise to free enslaved Hebrew servants during a time of national crisis. When they were under siege, they'd agreed to release those held in bondage, but then went back on their word once the immediate danger passed, re-enslaving people anyway. God's message here is sharp: you refused to grant freedom to your own people, so now I'm proclaiming a different kind of "liberty"—freedom from protection, which means you'll face war, disease, hunger, and exile. It's a hard reminder that how we treat vulnerable people matters deeply to God, and that our actions have real consequences.
