Jeremiah 34:16
“but you turned and profaned my name, and every man caused his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom you had let go free at their pleasure, to return. You brought them into subjection, to be to you for servants and for handmaids.’””
What does Jeremiah 34:16 mean?
The people of Judah had made a covenant with God to free their slaves, which was meant to be an act of obedience and justice. But then they changed their minds and forced those freed people back into slavery, essentially breaking both their promise to God and their word to the enslaved people. By going back on this commitment, they showed contempt for God himself, treating his name and his values as something they could discard whenever it became inconvenient. The deeper tragedy here is that their selfishness and reversal of freedom reveal a heart that hasn't truly turned toward God, no matter what words they might speak in prayer.
