Jeremiah 31:20
“Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I still earnestly remember him. therefore my heart yearns for him. I will surely have mercy on him,” says Yahweh.”
What does Jeremiah 31:20 mean?
God is wrestling with His own heart here, speaking about Israel (represented by Ephraim) the way a parent might while disciplining a beloved child. He has just been pronouncing judgment against them for their unfaithfulness, yet even as He does, His deepest nature pulls Him back toward compassion. The repetition of the question, "Is Ephraim my dear son?" isn't uncertainty but rather an expression of the ache that comes from loving someone who keeps choosing wrong.
