Jeremiah 3:5
““‘Will he retain his anger forever? Will he keep it to the end?’ Behold, you have spoken and have done evil things, and have had your way.””
What does Jeremiah 3:5 mean?
God is asking Israel a rhetorical question here, almost like he's reasoning with them: Will I really stay angry forever? The answer, of course, is no. But then comes the hard part of the verse, where God points out that despite knowing his mercy is real and available, they've kept choosing their own path anyway. They've spoken about returning to him, yet their actions tell a different story. There's something tender but also challenging in this. God seems to be saying: You know I don't hold grudges endlessly, yet you keep running toward the very things that hurt you. It's the kind of thing a loving parent might say to a child who keeps making the same destructive choice. The point isn't that God's patience has limits (it doesn't), but that we sometimes ignore his willingness to forgive and restore because we're too attached to doing things our own way.
