Jeremiah 27:14
“Don’t listen to the words of the prophets who speak to you, saying, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon;’ for they prophesy a lie to you.”
What does Jeremiah 27:14 mean?
During Judah's final collapse, false prophets were telling people what they desperately wanted to hear: that resistance to Babylon would succeed and God would instantly rescue them. But Jeremiah, speaking God's message, urged the opposite—that submission to Babylon was actually God's plan for this season, hard as that was to accept. The false prophets felt good in the moment; Jeremiah's words felt like betrayal. Yet Jeremiah was calling people toward survival and eventual restoration, while the false prophets were leading them toward destruction through false hope. This speaks to something true in any difficult time: the voices that comfort us immediately aren't always the ones guiding us toward what's best. Sometimes what we need to hear requires trust, even when it contradicts what we want to believe. The invitation here is to seek wisdom that's true over comfort that's false, recognizing that God's guidance might not always align with our wishes in the moment.
