What does Jeremiah 23:39 mean?

God speaks these words through Jeremiah to the false prophets who have been misleading Jerusalem, claiming messages of peace and safety when judgment was coming. This "forgetting" isn't about God losing memory, but about withdrawing his protection and presence, the very thing that had sustained the city for generations. When God says he will cast them away from his presence, it's the most devastating consequence imaginable for a people whose entire identity rested on being God's chosen ones in the place he had given them. The hardness of this language reflects how seriously God took the harm caused by those who twisted his word to comfort people in their sin, leaving them unprepared for what was coming.
