Jeremiah 23:27

β€œThey intend to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they each tell his neighbor, as their fathers forgot my name because of Baal.”

What does Jeremiah 23:27 mean?

In Jeremiah's time, false prophets were spreading their own visions and dreams, claiming these came from God, and in doing so they were leading people away from the true God toward idolatry (Baal was a false god). By promoting their own made-up messages, these prophets were effectively erasing God's real name and character from people's memory. God is grieving here that his people were so easily distracted that they could abandon him for whatever felt exciting or compelling in the moment, just as their ancestors had done generations before. It's a painful echo of the same mistake repeated, each generation drifting away because the voices around them pointed them elsewhere.
