““Go up to Lebanon, and cry. Lift up your voice in Bashan, and cry from Abarim; for all your lovers have been destroyed.”
What does Jeremiah 22:20 mean?
Jeremiah is using vivid geography here to paint a picture of widespread grief. Lebanon, Bashan, and Abarim were high places across the region, and he's calling Jerusalem to climb to these peaks and let out a cry of mourning that echoes across the land. The "lovers" refers to the nations and allies Judah thought they could rely on for protection, but those relationships have crumbled. It's an image of total abandonment, where even shouting from the mountaintops won't bring help, because the people who promised to stand with Jerusalem have either turned away or been defeated themselves. The prophet is capturing the desperation and isolation of a nation facing consequences for trusting in the wrong sources of security instead of in God.
