Jeremiah 21:14
“I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, says Yahweh; and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it will devour all that is around her.’””
What does Jeremiah 21:14 mean?
God is telling Jerusalem that the consequences they face will match the harm they've caused through their own choices and actions. The "fire in her forest" is a vivid image for the destruction that's coming, likely referring to the Babylonian invasion that Jeremiah warned about repeatedly throughout his ministry. This isn't arbitrary punishment from a distant God, but rather the natural outcome of a community that has turned away from justice and compassion. The prophet is essentially saying: you've built a life (and a society) on certain foundations, and what you're reaping is what you've sown. For those of us reading this today, it's a sobering reminder that our choices matter, and that turning toward cruelty, corruption, or indifference to others doesn't happen without cost.
