What does Jeremiah 21:1 mean?
King Zedekiah is desperate. Jerusalem is under siege by the Babylonian army, and the king sends two officials to the prophet Jeremiah, hoping for a word from God that might save the city. This moment captures a pattern we see throughout Jeremiah: people turn to God not out of genuine devotion, but because they're in crisis and running out of options. What makes this opening significant is that Zedekiah is asking the right person but for the wrong reasons. He wants reassurance that God will rescue them militarily, but Jeremiah has spent years warning that judgment is coming because of the nation's unfaithfulness. The message Jeremiah is about to deliver won't be the comfort the king is hoping for, though it will be true and ultimately merciful. Sometimes the hardest part of faith is being willing to hear what God actually says, rather than what we want to hear.
