What does Jeremiah 2:5 mean?
God is asking the people of Judah a piercing question through the prophet Jeremiah: what did we do to you that was so wrong you'd abandon us? The image is of a relationship broken not because God failed them, but because they chased after empty, meaningless things instead. When we wander from God toward whatever promises quick satisfaction or false security, we don't just hurt the relationship, Jeremiah suggests, we end up becoming hollow ourselves, shaped by the very emptiness we're pursuing. This comes early in Jeremiah's ministry, when God is still calling Israel back before things get much worse. It's a compassionate diagnosis wrapped in a hard question, inviting people to notice the contradiction in their own choices: they had a real God offering real relationship, yet they preferred fantasies that left them empty.
