Jeremiah 2:18
“Now what do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Shihor? Or why do you to go on the way to Assyria, to drink the waters of the River?”
What does Jeremiah 2:18 mean?
Jeremiah is asking the people of Judah a pointed question that cuts to the heart of their unfaithfulness. They're abandoning their relationship with God (represented by drinking from his waters) and instead running after other nations like Egypt and Assyria, hoping those foreign powers will protect and sustain them. The rhetorical question isn't really asking for an answer, it's expressing frustration and confusion at their choice, as if to say: "What good will this do you?" This mirrors struggles we face today when we trust in things other than God to save us or make us whole. We might chase success, relationships, possessions, or status thinking they'll fulfill us, only to find they leave us empty.
