What does Jeremiah 2:14 mean?

God is asking Israel hard questions through the prophet Jeremiah, pointing out something that shouldn't be true: they're acting enslaved when they were never born into bondage. Unlike nations around them, Israel was freed by God from Egypt and given their own land and identity. The questions carry real grief, because God is watching them choose ways that feel like slavery—turning to idols, breaking their covenant, forgetting the God who rescued them—even though they're supposed to be free. It's the kind of questioning a loving parent might ask a child who keeps making destructive choices: "Why are you living like this? Why are you putting yourself back in chains?"
