Jeremiah 2:13
““For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the spring of living waters, and cut them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.”
What does Jeremiah 2:13 mean?
God is describing what happens when we turn away from him and try to find satisfaction in other places instead. A spring of living water is fresh, flowing, and endlessly sustaining, while a broken cistern is something we've built ourselves to try to hold onto what we need, except it leaks and leaves us empty. The image captures something many of us know from experience: the things we turn to when we're thirsty for meaning, comfort, or belonging often disappoint us. We exhaust ourselves maintaining them, only to find they don't deliver what we hoped. God isn't angry in this verse so much as bewildered and grieved, like someone watching people they love settle for mud puddles when they could have a fountain.
