Jeremiah 17:18
“Let them be disappointed who persecute me, but let not me be disappointed. Let them be dismayed, but don’t let me be dismayed. Bring on them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction.”
What does Jeremiah 17:18 mean?
Jeremiah is pouring out a raw prayer during genuine suffering, asking God to turn the tables on those hunting him down. He's not asking for revenge out of spite, but calling on God's justice while expressing his deep need to know that God still stands with him, not against him. The "double destruction" isn't about cruelty for cruelty's sake, but about his desperation to see wrongdoing actually matter, to see that persecution doesn't win. What makes this honest is that Jeremiah doesn't hide his fear. He's saying: "I need to know I won't be left ashamed while my enemies walk free." Many of us have prayed similar things in dark moments, wondering if God sees what's being done to us.
