“Should a man make to himself gods, which yet are no gods?””
What does Jeremiah 16:20 mean?
This rhetorical question cuts straight to something absurd: why would anyone pour their energy into creating or worshipping something that has no real power or existence? Jeremiah is confronting people who've abandoned the living God to chase idols, whether literal carved images or the invisible "gods" we construct today (status, money, approval, control). The question assumes we know the answer: of course not, that makes no sense. Yet we do it anyway, which is exactly why Jeremiah needed to ask. He's inviting his listeners (and us) to step back and see the ridiculousness of our own misplaced devotion, to recognize when we're investing our hearts in things that can never truly satisfy or save us.
