Jeremiah 15:6
“You have rejected me,” says Yahweh. “You have gone backward. Therefore I have stretched out my hand against you, and destroyed you. I am weary of showing compassion.”
What does Jeremiah 15:6 mean?
This is God speaking to Judah during a time of persistent unfaithfulness, and the words are painfully honest about what happens when a relationship is repeatedly rejected. God isn't describing a sudden turn of anger but rather the exhaustion that comes after offering grace again and again, only to watch people turn away. The image of a stretched-out hand, which elsewhere in Scripture means rescue and protection, here means judgment, showing how the same divine action can mean opposite things depending on whether we're turning toward God or away. The hardest part of this verse might be "I am weary of showing compassion." It suggests that even God's mercy has limits, at least in how it's experienced on earth. This doesn't mean God stops being merciful in some ultimate sense, but rather that continued rejection of His offer of relationship carries real consequences. If you're reading this in a dark season, it can also be a wake-up call: the time to turn back is now, while that compassion is still being offered, rather than waiting until the situation becomes irreversible.
