What does Jeremiah 14:11 mean?

God is telling Jeremiah to stop interceding for Judah, even though prayer for others' wellbeing is normally a sacred duty. This shocking command comes after the people have repeatedly rejected God's warnings and turned away from him, so persistent prayer on their behalf would only delay the consequences they need to face. Sometimes the most loving thing isn't to shield someone from difficulty, but to let them experience the real results of their choices so they might finally turn around. It's a hard moment that shows how seriously God takes our freedom to reject him, and how sometimes stepping back is itself an act of mercy.
