What does Jeremiah 13:2 mean?
Jeremiah is describing a peculiar command from God: to purchase a linen belt and wear it as a living object lesson. What might seem like an odd assignment was actually a powerful way to grab people's attention in ancient times, when prophets often acted out God's messages instead of just speaking them. The belt itself wasn't the point, though, and in the verses that follow, Jeremiah buries it to show how God's people would be ruined and separated from him if they continued turning away. Sometimes the most memorable way to understand truth isn't through words alone, but through witnessing something strange and being forced to ask why, which is exactly what God was inviting Jeremiah's community to do.
