What does Jeremiah 12:17 mean?

God is describing what happens when a nation persistently refuses to listen to his call toward justice and righteousness. The image of being "plucked up" suggests being torn from the ground, losing the stability and security a people once had. This isn't God acting on a whim, but rather the natural consequence of a community that turns away from what brings life and flourishing. Jeremiah lived during a time when kingdoms around him were crumbling because of their own choices, not just foreign invasion. When a nation systematically ignores God's warnings through his prophets, it eventually collapses under the weight of its own corruption and broken systems. The severity of this language reflects how serious the stakes are: the foundations of any society depend on something beyond itself.
