Jeremiah 11:13
“For according to the number of your cities are your gods, Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have you set up altars to the shameful thing, even altars to burn incense to Baal.’”
What does Jeremiah 11:13 mean?
God is pointing out that Judah has made idolatry as widespread and systematic as their own cities and streets, treating false gods almost like a civic infrastructure. The prophet is using sharp, almost sarcastic language to show how deeply and thoroughly the people have turned from God, with altars to Baal (a fertility god they'd adopted from neighboring cultures) scattered everywhere like common public fixtures. This wasn't occasional stumbling into temptation, but rather a deliberate, organized abandonment of their covenant with God. The message is that when we gradually build our lives around things other than God, we often don't notice how far we've drifted until someone names it plainly, and that's what Jeremiah is doing here, calling them to see the scope of what they've chosen.
