“They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don’t speak. They must be carried, because they can’t move. Don’t be afraid of them; for they can’t do evil, neither is it in them to do good.””
What does Jeremiah 10:5 mean?
Jeremiah is describing idols that people have crafted from wood and decorated with skill, yet they're ultimately lifeless objects. No matter how beautifully made they are, they can't speak, move on their own, or act in any way, so people have to carry them around like furniture. The prophet is essentially saying: these objects people bow down to are powerless. They can't harm you or help you, so why would you fear them or trust them with your life and hope? It's a gentle but direct challenge to anyone tempted to worship something carved by human hands rather than turning to the living God.
