Jeremiah 10:4

They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, so that it can’t move.

What does Jeremiah 10:4 mean?

Jeremiah is describing how people craft idols, fastening them with nails so they won't topple over. The irony cuts deep: they're going to such lengths to stabilize something they've made with their own hands, treating it as though it has power, when really it's just wood and metal. This was Jeremiah's way of challenging his people who were turning to false gods instead of trusting the living God. He's pointing out how absurd it is to pour such care and resources into something that can't even stand on its own without mechanical help, let alone help you stand through life's struggles.
