James 4:17

To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.

What does James 4:17 mean?

When we know what's right and choose not to do it anyway, that's sin. It's not just about the wrong things we actively do, but also the good things we fail to do when we have the ability and opportunity. James is pointing out that sin isn't only commission, it's also omission. If you see someone who needs help and you're able to help them, but you walk past, that matters to God. This pushes us toward a more active, engaged faith where we're not just avoiding harm, but actually doing the good we're capable of.
