What does James 4:16 mean?

When we brag about our plans and accomplishments as if we've got everything figured out on our own, we're essentially claiming credit for things beyond our control. James is calling out that kind of arrogant confidence, especially when it leaves God out of the picture entirely. He's not saying it's wrong to feel good about honest work, but rather to notice when pride has slipped in and we're acting like we're self-sufficient. The deeper point is that boasting like this disconnects us from reality, because our lives actually depend on circumstances and people and grace we didn't earn.
