James 2:20
“But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?”
What does James 2:20 mean?
James is addressing someone who claims to have faith but does nothing to back it up, and he's calling them out gently but directly. Faith that never moves you to action, that doesn't change how you treat people or respond to their needs, isn't really faith at all—it's just empty words you tell yourself. It's like saying you love someone but never showing up for them. This doesn't mean you earn your way to God through good deeds. Rather, genuine faith in Jesus naturally produces a life that reflects what you believe. If your faith hasn't touched how you live, it might be worth asking yourself what you actually believe and why.
