What does James 2:15 mean?

This opening of James's example paints a stark picture: someone in your faith community is literally without adequate clothing or enough to eat. James is setting up a challenge about what our beliefs actually mean in real life. He's asking us to imagine encountering someone in genuine, visible need, not as an abstract idea but as a real person we can see and help. The specificity matters because it's easy to feel compassionate about distant suffering, but harder when need shows up right in front of us.
