What does James 2:13 mean?
There's a tension built into human nature: we're quick to condemn others for their failures while hoping for grace when we stumble ourselves. James cuts through that hypocrisy by reminding us that hardness toward others creates hardness toward ourselves, both in how we're treated and in who we become. When we withhold mercy, we lose access to it, but when we extend compassion, we actually win something greater than perfect judgment ever could. The second sentence is the heart of it: mercy isn't weakness or a failure to hold people accountable. Mercy is the stronger force. It transforms situations that judgment alone would only damage further.
