“When they tell you, “Consult with those who have familiar spirits and with the wizards, who chirp and who mutter:” shouldn’t a people consult with their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?”
What does Isaiah 8:19 mean?
Isaiah is asking a pointed question during a time when people were tempted to seek guidance from mediums and fortune tellers instead of trusting God. The "chirping and muttering" describes the eerie sounds associated with spiritual séances, which were popular practices people turned to when anxious or desperate for answers. The prophet's rhetorical questions are meant to jolt people awake: Why would you seek wisdom from the dead or from practitioners claiming secret knowledge when you can approach the living God directly? There's something almost absurd about the comparison, as if to say, "Think about what you're actually doing here." The underlying message is that consulting the dead or relying on hidden spiritual forces reflects a broken trust in God's willingness and ability to guide us. This speaks to a deeper human struggle that hasn't changed much. When we're frightened or uncertain, we're tempted to seek answers anywhere except from God, sometimes through whatever seems most alluring or exclusive. Isaiah invites us to reconsider that impulse and remember that direct access to God is both possible and vastly better than chasing after mysterious spiritual shortcuts.
