“Then I said, “Lord, how long?” He answered, “Until cities are waste without inhabitant, and houses without man, and the land becomes utterly waste,”
What does Isaiah 6:11 mean?
Isaiah has just received an overwhelming vision of God's holiness and been called to deliver a difficult message. His natural question—"How long will this last?"—is one many of us ask when we're asked to do something that seems impossible or when we're facing hard news. God's answer describes a time of judgment and desolation, which sounds bleak at first reading, but it's important to know that Isaiah's full calling (which continues in the next verses) includes hope: God promises that a remnant will survive, like a tree stump that sprouts new growth. The point here is that God doesn't soften the reality of the consequences people will face, but he also doesn't leave the story there. Sometimes when we're in a season of loss or difficulty, it helps to remember that even messages of judgment in Scripture aren't the final word—there's always a bigger story unfolding.
