Isaiah 6:10
“Make the heart of this people fat. Make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed.””
What does Isaiah 6:10 mean?
When Isaiah receives his calling in the temple, God sends him with a hard message to deliver to people who have turned away. This verse describes what will happen as a result of their own refusal to listen—not because God wants them to stay broken, but because persistent rejection hardens the heart. The "fat heart," heavy ears, and shut eyes describe what happens to us spiritually when we keep saying no to truth we sense is real. It's a sobering reminder that there's a difference between inability to understand and unwillingness to understand. When we repeatedly ignore what we know deep down, our capacity to receive help and healing actually diminishes. God isn't causing the blindness; he's describing the natural consequence of people closing themselves off. The tragic part is that healing remains available to anyone who turns back toward him, but that turning requires us to stay soft, listening, and honest about what we're hearing.
