Isaiah 58:6
““Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?”
What does Isaiah 58:6 mean?
God is redefining what fasting and spiritual devotion actually mean. Instead of just going hungry or performing outward religious rituals, Isaiah says the fast God truly wants is one where we actively work to free people from injustice, oppression, and exploitation. It's about using our energy and resources to help those trapped in difficult circumstances rather than simply denying ourselves food or comforts. The metaphor of bonds, yokes, and straps speaks to the weight of systemic oppression, debt, abuse, or any system that keeps people trapped. When Isaiah says "break every yoke," he's pointing to a God who cares deeply about liberation and dignity for the vulnerable. This challenges us to ask where we might have the power or privilege to help break cycles of suffering in our own communities, whether through direct action, advocacy, or changing how we use what we have.
