What does Isaiah 57:5 mean?
Isaiah's words here are sharp and accusatory, directed at people who've turned away from God toward idolatry and deeply harmful practices. The "oaks" and "green trees" were common worship sites for false gods in ancient Israel, where people engaged in rituals they believed would bring blessing or fertility. But the prophet isn't just criticizing their misplaced devotion, he's highlighting the moral horror that follows: child sacrifice was part of some pagan worship practices, conducted in hidden places ("valleys" and "rocky clefts") where these acts could be hidden from view.
