Isaiah 57:17
“I was angry because of the iniquity of his covetousness, and struck him; I hid myself and was angry; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart.”
What does Isaiah 57:17 mean?
God describes a painful cycle here: when people turn away from him through greed and selfishness, he withdraws his presence and allows them to experience the consequences of their choices. The striking isn't primarily about punishment, but about the natural result of separation from God. Even when God removes his comfort and guidance, people sometimes respond by going deeper into what they want rather than returning to him, which only increases their pain. This passage speaks to how our own desires can harden us against God's attempts to get our attention. Sometimes what feels like divine distance is actually space we've created ourselves by refusing to listen.
