Isaiah 52:4
“For thus says the Lord Yahweh: “My people went down at the first into Egypt to live there: and the Assyrian has oppressed them without cause.”
What does Isaiah 52:4 mean?
God is reminding His people of their painful history. The passage references how Jacob's family went to Egypt seeking refuge during a famine, but centuries later their descendants were enslaved there. Then after being freed, they faced oppression from the Assyrian empire, which conquered the northern kingdom of Israel without justification or provocation. This verse appears in a section where Isaiah is comforting exiled Israelites by reminding them that God sees their suffering and hasn't forgotten them. The point isn't to dwell on past griefs, but to assure them that God witnessed every injustice they endured, and deliverance is coming.
