Isaiah 5:8

Woe to those who join house to house, who lay field to field, until there is no room, and you are made to dwell alone in the middle of the land!

What does Isaiah 5:8 mean?

Isaiah is speaking against greed that destroys community. The image is of wealthy people accumulating land and property relentlessly, pushing out smaller landowners until entire regions belong to just a few people. When one person or family controls everything around them, the prophet warns, they end up isolated and vulnerable, not blessed. It's a striking reminder that unchecked accumulation often backfires: the person who has everything ends up surrounded by resentment, dependence on hired hands rather than neighbors, and ultimately alone.
