What does Isaiah 5:18 mean?
Isaiah uses vivid, almost absurd imagery here: people are "dragging" their sin around like it's a heavy load they're deliberately hauling behind them. The picture is of someone working hard, putting real effort into staying connected to wrongdoing through lies and deception, as if they've tied themselves to wickedness with rope. The prophet is calling out a particular kind of foolishness—not accidental stumbling into sin, but choosing it deliberately, even energetically. He's pointing to people whose lives are built on dishonesty, who keep reinforcing their harmful choices through more lies, never acknowledging or turning away from what they're doing. It's a wake-up call about how we can become so committed to a false version of ourselves that we don't even realize we're exhausting ourselves in service to it.
