What does Isaiah 5:13 mean?
Isaiah is describing what happens when people turn away from God and ignore His wisdom. When we lack genuine knowledge of God and His ways, we become vulnerable to all kinds of consequences, both spiritual and practical. The "captivity" here represents being trapped by our own choices and the systems that exploit us when we're not grounded in truth. The second part paints a picture of widespread suffering: even the respected leaders go hungry, and ordinary people face desperation. This isn't punishment falling randomly from heaven, but rather the natural result of a community that has lost its moral and spiritual bearings. When people don't know God, they can be easily misled, taken advantage of, and left spiritually starving no matter what material resources surround them.
