Isaiah 48:18

Oh that you had listened to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

What does Isaiah 48:18 mean?

God is expressing what could have been if his people had simply followed his guidance. The image is beautiful and almost wistful: peace flowing steadily like a river, righteousness rolling in waves like the sea. This isn't about punishment or shame, but about the real consequences of our choices. When we ignore wisdom we know is good, we lose something precious—not because God takes it away, but because we've stepped off the path that leads to it. There's an invitation here too, buried in the "if only": it's never too late to listen and find your way back to that deep, flowing peace.
