Isaiah 44:18
“They don’t know, neither do they consider: for he has shut their eyes, that they can’t see; and their hearts, that they can’t understand.”
What does Isaiah 44:18 mean?
Isaiah is describing people who have made idols from wood, using part of a tree for fuel and the rest to carve a god they then bow down to. The verse captures how spiritual blindness works: these people are unable to see the absurdity of their own choices because their capacity to perceive truth has become closed off. It's not that God arbitrarily prevents them from understanding, but rather that persistent rejection of truth gradually hardens the heart until genuine insight becomes impossible. This speaks to how we can become so committed to something false that we lose the ability to recognize it as false, whether that's an actual idol, a harmful belief system, or anything that replaces genuine faith.
