What does Isaiah 44:17 mean?
Isaiah is describing how someone takes a piece of wood, uses part of it for practical needs like warmth, and then fashions the leftovers into an idol to worship. It's almost darkly humorous, the way the prophet tells it—this person is praying to something they made with their own hands, asking it for deliverance as if it had power to give. The point isn't really about carved images in a museum; it's about how easily we can invest our faith and hope in things we've essentially created ourselves. We might do this with money, status, relationships, or systems we've built up, treating them as though they can save us when they're ultimately powerless.
