What does Isaiah 40:19 mean?
Isaiah is painting a picture of how hollow idol-making really is. A craftsman shapes some material, another worker covers it with gold leaf to make it gleam beautifully, and they fashion decorative chains to hang it up, creating something that looks impressive and expensive. But it's still just metal shaped by human hands, no matter how much it glitters. The prophet is making the point that we sometimes pour enormous effort and resources into creating gods we can see and touch, when the real God needs no such crafting. It's a gentle challenge to look beyond surface beauty and ask what we're actually putting our trust in.
