What does Isaiah 38:8 mean?
King Hezekiah was facing death from a serious illness when he prayed desperately to God for healing. God granted his prayer and gave him a miraculous sign to prove it: the sun's shadow on a sundial would move backward instead of forward, going back ten steps. This reversal of nature's course was God's way of saying, "I hear you, and I'm going to restore your life." The sign speaks to something deeper than just a neat trick. When everything in life seems to be moving in one direction (toward loss, toward the end), God is saying that He can reverse what seems irreversible. For Hezekiah and for us, it's a picture of grace interrupting the inevitable, of healing breaking into hopelessness. The specific detail about the sundial makes the promise concrete and visible, something Hezekiah could point to and remember when doubt crept back in.
